Some people think that being good will get them into Heaven. Let me just say it upfront, being good does not get you into Heaven. So why be and do good? Because at the end we will have to give an account for our actions whether good or bad. And our deeds will be judged by fire. Whatever remains it's our reward.
1 Corinthians 3:11-15 (NKJV) For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.
We are not allowed into heaven by what we do but by what God did.
John 3:16-18 (NKJV) For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
Why did Jesus said "might" and not "will"? Because He knew that not everyone will believe. Look what the next verse says:
18“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Salvation it's a choice. As long as you are breathing you have a choice. You believe or you don't. Lots of people ask "How can a loving God send people to hell?". The truth is God doesn't send anyone to hell we choose to. Again it's a choice. Read the above verse again.
There are people that say "I done so many bad things in life that I'm not good enough for Heaven". And they are right. And there are some that say that they are going to heaven because they are good. And they are wrong.
Luke 18:18-27 (NKJV) Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
19So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. 20You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’ ”
21And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.”
22So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
23But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.
This ruler had everything but he knew there was something missing in his life. He though he follow all the commandments until Jesus show him that he was missing the First commandment which is have no other God. He riches was his god.
Let me stop here and say that God is not against people having riches. He is however against riches having you.
With God All Things Are Possible
24And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
26And those who heard it said, “Who then can be saved?”27But He said, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”
Look what Jesus says in this parable:
Luke 18:10-14 (NKJV) "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.' And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
You see it's not by you but by Him.
Romans 3:23-24 (NKJV) for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
